A fire broke out at EV startup Rivian Automotive‘s (NASDAQ:RIVN) EV plant in Normal, Illinois, late on Saturday night, causing damage to a few vehicles.
What Happened: A Rivian spokesperson told Benzinga in a statement that the company is investigating the cause of the fire.
The fire damaged a number of the vehicles in a parking lot at the factory but the plant itself is unaffected, the spokesperson said, while adding that they are not aware of any injuries at the time.
The company spokesperson did not provide a number as to how many vehicles were damaged in the fire incident.
Benzinga has also reached out to the Normal Fire Department for details about the fire incident.
Why It Matters: The manufacturing plant in Normal is Rivian's only. The company has plans for another $5 billion plant in Georgia. However, the construction of the Georgia plant has been halted to cut costs for now and is expected to resume only at a later point in time.
The company currently makes its R1 vehicles at the factory and also intends to start manufacturing its cheaper R2 SUV- priced at around $45,000- at the plant in early 2026.
