Can Psychedelics Spark The Climate Revolution We Need?

Juan Spínelli
October 04, 2024

As thousands gathered recently in New York City for Climate Week where traditional approaches to combating the climate crisis such as fossil fuel phaseouts and corporate carbon credits, psychedelics shared the spotlight with a less conventional proposal. As The Guardian reported, the first Psychedelic-Climate Week brought together advocates, researchers and entrepreneurs who say psychedelics could catalyze personal and societal transformations vital to addressing climate change.

Psychedelics For Climate Action

Marissa Feinberg, founder of Psychedelics for Climate Action, envisions a world where psychedelics like psilocybin mushrooms and ketamine aid not just individuals but entire organizations in making more climate-conscious decisions. During the event, participants explored the role of these substances in promoting behaviors like recycling and water conservation, inspired by what Feinberg describes as a "sense of connectedness." She argues that this heightened awareness can lead to more intentional, eco-friendly choices in daily life. "There's a lot of energy there and you have to take that and turn it into agency for good."

Science Behind Psychedelics And Eco-Consciousness

Is this enthusiasm for psychedelics supported by science? The evidence is mixed. Research, such as a 2017 study, suggests that psychedelic experiences can foster a feeling of "nature-connectedness" associated with environmental awareness. Yet, Nicolas Langlitz, a historian at the New School who studies psychedelics, points out that these findings often reflect the preexisting values of study participants, who tend to be more liberal and eco-conscious. He also highlights the paradox of eco-conscious individuals flying to the Amazon for ayahuasca ceremonies, which contradicts their purported climate values.

Personal Power And Policy For Real Change

Critics argue that relying on psychedelics to solve systemic issues like climate change can obscure the need for substantial policy changes. Langlitz cautions, "I'm generally skeptical about any individualized solution… at the end of the day, it's policy decisions that make a difference." However, Feinberg believes both individual actions and policy shifts are necessary, as systems are create for individuals to participate in. "We all have power. We all influence each other," she stated.

Double Edge Ideology Sword

Psychedelics have long been associated with progressive and anti-authoritarian ideals, but not exclusively. Right-wing figures, like Ernst Jünger, have also found inspiration in psychedelics, complicating the narrative that these substances inherently foster pro-social or climate-friendly behaviors. Elon Musk, known for his controversial stance on worker rights, reportedly uses ketamine but has yet to align his actions with the humanitarian principles proponents associate with psychedelic use. Feinberg acknowledges that "psychedelic healing… is not at all a silver bullet," admitting it doesn't guarantee positive change for everyone.

Eco-Anxiety

Meanwhile, climate change is impacting mental health globally, from those whose lives are disrupted by extreme weather events to individuals grappling with anxiety about the future. "Fossil-fuel companies are using the power of their wallet and their political reach to intimidate anyone who wants to move forward", said Christiana Figueres, a Costa Rican diplomat and former UN climate leader. As this environmental anxiety grows, more people may look inward for solutions. Figueres now leads spiritual retreats, helping participants channel their eco-anxiety into constructive actions. "You have to turn that energy into agency for good," Figueres said.
